A ballet by Demis Volpi based on a play by Julio Cortázar

A new book. A new ballet. We don’t yet know what journey the story will take us on. But the few words that we could make out so far sparked our interest and made us curious about the journey. Sometimes it’s just a few lines that describe an entirely new world, then again a character’s whole life can stretch across a hundred pages. Letters melt into words, into images and into the personal imagination of everyone who reads them for the first time.
Demis Volpi repeatedly finds inspiration in stories, plays and novels and transforms them into dance. For example, the emotional sate of a monologue can be transformed associatively into an expressive solo. The words penetrate the body right to the tips of its fingers and toes and make dancing a necessity.
To speak through movement and to create stories with bodies is intended to become a key feature of the Ballett am Rhein‘s repertoire. But not every story is suitable. It is necessary to find the correct tone and the appropriate phrasing. This takes time and concentration. Both of these have been in short supply amid the hurried adjustments of recent weeks. Suddenly the artistic idea was not the only issue: we also had to think about the rules of distancing, working conditions and group sizes – and this has turned our original plans upside down.
So that’s why there’s still a mysterious blank space here – which we look forward to filling and presenting to you very soon.
