Axel Kober has been General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein since 2009/10. He sets decisive accents with a broad repertoire ranging from the Baroque to important works of the 20th and 21st centuries. Outstanding productions include Alban Berg's "Wozzeck" directed by Stefan Herheim, the ballet productions with Brahms' "Ein Deutsches Requiem" and Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" choreographed by Martin Schläpfer, as well as Kobers' rehearsal of Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" staged by Dietrich Hilsdorf in Düsseldorf and Duisburg, which resulted in a highly acclaimed live recording with the Duisburg Philharmonic.
After first engagements as Kapellmeister in Schwerin and Dortmund, Axel Kober became deputy GMD in Mannheim before moving to the Leipzig Opera as music director and musical director in 2007. Axel Kober has also been GMD of the Duisburg Philharmonic since 2019.
Concerts have taken him to the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. This season he makes his debut with the Graz Philharmonic and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
Axel Kober is a welcome guest at Europe's leading opera houses such as the Semperoper Dresden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera, the Royal Opera Copenhagen, the Opéra National du Rhin Strasbourg, the Zurich Opera House and at the Bayreuth Festival. Following an equally acclaimed "Ring" cycle in 2019 and 2022, he conducts regularly at the Vienna State Opera.
In the 2023/24 season Axel Kober can be seen in Vienna with "Der Rosenkavalier" (Strauss) and "Turandot" (Puccini), at the Staatsoper Berlin with "Jenufa" (Janáček), in Hamburg he is again on the podium with "Turandot" and makes his debut with "Tannhäuser" (Wagner) with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo.
