The multi-award winning American director Daniel Kramer studied Interdisciplinary Arts at Northwestern University (USA), the Ecole Internationale de Mime Corporel Dramatique and Circus Space in London, and the International School of Commedia dell'arte in Italy. He works as a freelance director across genres in drama as well as opera, musical and dance theatre productions. He made his debut as an opera director in 2008 with his production of Harrison Birtwistle's Punch & Judy at English National Opera. The South Bank Award-winning production was also shown at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. This was followed by opera productions such as Bartók's "Duke Bluebeard's Castle" (English National Opera, Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatres) and Debussy's "Pelléas et Mélisande" (Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatres) conducted by Valery Gergiev. Bizet's "Carmen" (Vlaamse Opera Antwerp and Opera North in Leeds), Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" (English National Opera), Rimsky-Korsakov's "Sadko" (Vlaamse Opera) and Britten's "War Requiem" (English National Opera and Gran Teatre del Liceu). Other stations in his international career have included Taiwan, Australia, Spain, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Tokyo.
Between 2004 and 2012 Daniel Kramer worked in several theatres as Deputy Artistic Director and was Artistic Director of English National Opera London from 2016 to 2019. He has also taught as a guest lecturer at Harvard University, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, New York University and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, among others, and is a member of the NYC Drama League.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Daniel Kramer staged Korngold's "Die tote Stadt" in the 2022/23 season.
