Texan Scott Hendricks is one of the most sought-after and versatile baritones of our time. From Verdi and Puccini to Debussy, Britten, Schreker and contemporary composers: Scott Hendricks keeps a varied "opera diary". As a respected interpreter of Puccini and Verdi, his repertoire includes Sharpless ("Madama Butterfly"), Scarpia ("Tosca"), Michele ("Il tabarro") and the title role in "Gianni Schicchi", Renato ("Un ballo in maschera"), Conte di Luna ("Il Trovatore"), the title roles in "Macbeth" and "Rigoletto", Amonasro ("Aida"), Germont ("La traviata", Iago ("Otello") and Posa ("Don Carlo"). He is a regular guest at the most renowned opera houses and festivals worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Washington National Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, the Opéra national de Paris, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona (title role "Król Roger"), the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Stuttgart State Opera, the Theater an der Wien (Vladislas "Dalibor"), the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie in Brussels, the Dutch National Opera and De Vlaamse Opera, where he was honored for his portrayal of the title role in the world premiere of Giorgio Battistelli's "Richard III." (directed by Robert Carsen), the Zurich Opera (Hamlet III in Rihm's "The Hamlet Machine"), the Opéra National du Rhin (Förster "The Cunning Little Vixen"), the Teatro Massimo Palermo (Tamare "The Marked Ones"), the Teatro La Fenice (Traveler "Death in Venice"), the Mikhailovsky Theatre St. Petersburg, the Wales National Opera, the Israeli Opera as well as the Saito Kinen Festival (Yeletsky "Queen of Spades") and the Bregenz Festival (Escamillo "Carmen").
Highlights of the recent past include Barnaba ("La Gioconda"), his role debut as Tonio ("Pagliacci") and the role of Victor Frankenstein in the world premiere of Mark Grey's "Frankenstein" at La Monnaie, the title role in the world premiere of "M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder" at the Komische Oper Berlin, Scarpia ("Tosca") at the San Francisco Opera, Jack Rance ("La Fanciulla del West") in Zurich and Ruprecht ("The Fiery Angel") in Warsaw and at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. Past engagements include Jaroslav Prus in Janáček's "Die Sache Makropulos" under Jakub Hrůša at the Zurich Opera, "Il trovatore" staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov at the Cologne Opera and the title role in Philipp Stölzl's "Rigoletto" production under the direction of Enrique Mazzola at the Bregenz Festival.
This was followed by "Falstaff" at the Opéra de Lyon and Gleby ("Siberia") at the Theater Bonn, as well as his role debut as Kurwenal ("Tristan und Isolde") at the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy. In the USA, he was heard as Rigoletto in Salt Lake City and then as Kovalyov in a new production of Shostakovich's "The Nose" at La Monnaie in Brussels. In the 2023/24 season, Scott Hendricks celebrated his premiere as Alberich ("Das Rheingold") under the musical direction of Alain Altinoglu and was also seen as Roberto ("Nostalgia") under Carlo Goldstein in a production by Krystian Lada in Brussels and as Mad Hatter in "Alice in Wonderland" under the direction of Markus Stenz in Amsterdam. Further important role debuts in Genoa, Berlin and Brussels are firmly scheduled for the coming seasons. Scott Hendricks will make his role and house debut at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in the 2024/25 season in the trouser role of Mamma Agata.
