Sarah Rolke
Born in Giessen, Sarah Rolke began her career as a costume designer after internships and assistantships with Claus Peymann (Berliner Ensemble) and William Friedkin, among others. In addition to freelance assistantships at the theaters in Braunschweig and Magdeburg, she worked as an assistant to Achim Freyer at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow ("La traviata") in 2005, at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw ("Die Zauberflöte") in 2006 and accompanied Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" at the Los Angeles Opera from 2007-2010.
She created her first costume designs from 2009/10 at Theater Vorpommern and Konzerthaus Berlin, in 2011 she was costume assistant at the Salzburg Festival for Peter Stein's production of "Macbeth", in 2012 for "La bohème" (director: Damiano Michieletto) and in 2013 "Don Carlo" (director: Peter Stein). She has worked at the Theater an der Wien, the Hong Kong Opera & Beijing Opera (China), the Gran Teatre Del Liceu in Barcelona and the Maggio Musicale in Florence, among others. Since 2014, Sarah Rolke has worked exclusively as a freelance costume designer, including at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in 2014 for the award-winning production of "Doctor Atomic" directed by Yuval Sharon, "Falstaff", "L'elisir d'amore", 2016 for "Die Walküre" (directed by Yuval Sharon) and 2019 for "Serse" at the International Handel Festival. She designed costumes for the Heidelberg Theater for "Mitridate" (Porpora) and "La Porta della legge" (Sciarrino), among others. This was followed by "Die 7 Todsünden" (Weill) in Braunschweig, "Aida" (Verdi) at Theater Dortmund and "Anfang und Ende B.A.C.H61" (directed by Aniara Amos) at Staatstheater Kassel. Together with her husband, she creates Sfx make-up (special effect make-up) mainly for French films. The costume design for "Anatevka" is Sarah Rolke's first work at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
