Ana Catalina Román studied dance at the Real Conservatorio Superior in her Hometown Madrid. She continued her training at the John Cranko Ballet Academy in Stuttgart, where she first encountered works by William Forsythe. In 1978 she went to the Musiktheater im Revier (head choreographer Bernd Schindowski) and moved to Frankfurt/Main in 1980 (ballet director Egon Madsen). Here she danced choreographies by John Cranko, George Balanchine, Peter Wright, Uwe Scholz and William Forsythe, among others. Since William Forsythe’s appointment as director of the Frankfurt Ballet in 1984, Román has worked there (as a soloist since 1987) under his direction and he choreographed many pieces for her. She also danced in pieces by guest choreographers such as Jan Fabre, Daniel Larrieu, Amanda Miller and Tony Rizzi. Since 1992 she has regularly rehearsed Forsythe productions with numerous international ballet companies, including ADT (Australian Dance Theatre), Nederlands Dans Theater, Compañía Nacional de Danza (Madrid), Ballet Gothenburg and Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. In addition, Ana Catalina Román also teaches William Forsythe's "Improvisational Technologies". Ana Catalina Román has been choreographing herself since 2000 and made her debut with "Eguipoise" at Ballett Frankfurt. This was followed by "Unobserved Phases" (Madrid, January 2004), "The secret Bob" (Madrid 2004), "anna tanzt" (Munich 2006), "Parent(h)esis o dicho sea de paso" (Madrid 2013), "Hecho a mano" (Madrid 2013/18) and "Cuán simple deseo" (Madrid 2022). In addition to her activities as a dancer, choreographer, ballet master and lecturer, a strong passion for art and film led her to pursue animation and a master's degree in stagecraft. From 2006 to 2024 she was Professor of Choreographic Composition and Improvisation at the Conservatorio Superior de Danza María de Ávila CSDMA in Madrid. Since September 2024 she is Assistant to the Artistic Direction of the Compañía Nacional de Danza in Spain.
