Christoph Gedschold is Music Director of the Leipzig Opera and designated Chief Conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra from 2024/25.
While studying piano and conducting in Leipzig and Hamburg, the conductor and pianist Christoph Gedschold was already correpeting as part of the International Opera Studio in Zurich. In 2002, he became conductor and répétiteur at the Lucerne Theatre and worked at the Lucerne Festival for Claudio Abbado, Mariss Jansons and Pierre Boulez, among others. In 2005, he assisted Ulf Schirmer at the Bregenz Festival and moved to the Nuremberg State Theatre. In 2009, he was appointed First Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe. There he conducted premieres of Weinberg's "The Passenger", Martinu's "The Greek Passion" and repertoire works such as "Der Rosenkavalier", "Meistersinger", "Lohengrin" and "Peter Grimes". Christoph Gedschold has been Kapellmeister at Leipzig Opera since the 2015/16 season and has conducted the premieres of "Freischütz" (Weber), "Bluebeard's Castle" (Bartók), "Rusalka" (Janáček), "The Bartered Bride" (Smetana) and "Pagliacci" (Mascagni), among others.
He has also been regularly invited by many opera houses since 2015: He has conducted premieres such as "The Passenger" by Mieczysław Weinberg at the Semperoper Dresden and at the Frankfurt Opera, and the premieres of "Rusalka" and "The Magic Flute" (Mozart) in Cologne. He conducted the premiere of "Götterdämmerung" at the Opera de Oviedo in Spain. He has also conducted repertoire pieces such as Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" and "La Traviata", Janáček's "Katja Kabanova", Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" and Korngold's "Die tote Stadt" at the Hamburg State Opera, Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos" in Frankfurt, "Turandot" in Cologne as well as "Der Freischütz", Mozart's "Don Giovanni" and "Die Zauberflöte" at the Semperoper in Dresden and Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" at the Zurich Opera.
Current projects at Leipzig Opera include new productions of "Rosenkavalier" (Strauss) and "Lady Macbeth von Mzensk" (Shostakovich) as well as "Tristan und Isolde" (Wagner), "Elektra" (Strauss) and "La Traviata" and a new production of "Lohengrin" (Wagner) in Oviedo. He will also conduct the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra in several concerts (including Bruckner No. 4 and Sibelius No. 3).
In addition to his regular collaboration with the Gewandhausorchester, Christoph Gedschold has also conducted the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Hamburg Philharmonic, the MDR Symphony Orchestra, the German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken, the Gürzenich Orchestra, the Zurich Opera Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Montrèal, the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic.
