Vasily Barkhatov

Vasily Barkhatov was born in Moscow in 1983. In 2005 he graduated in directing from the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. He subsequently staged "Moscow, Cheryomushki" at the St. St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre "Moscow, Cheryomushki" by Shostakovich (in triple role as director and set designer, 2006), "Jenůfa" by Janáček (2007), "Benvenuto Cellini" by Berlioz (2007), Verdi's "Otello" (2007), "The Brothers Karamazov" by Smelkov (world premiere 2008), Shchedrin's "Dead Souls" (2011) and Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" (2011). He was awarded the Golden Mask in 2009 for his production of "The Brothers Karamazov". Other works include J. Strauss (son) "Die Fledermaus" at the Bolshoi Theatre (2010), Berlioz "La Damnation de Faust" (Nationaltheater Mannheim, 2015), Zimmermann "Die Soldaten" (Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden, 2016), the world premiere of A. Reimann's "L'Invisible" (Deutsche Oper Berlin, 2017) and Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" (Stockholm Royal Opera, 2018). From 2013 to 2014 he was Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where he staged Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman". In Basel, he staged Mussorgsky's "Khovanshchina" in 2015, Prokofiev's "The Gambler" in 2018 and Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" in 2019. He staged Puccini's "La fanciulla del West" (2018) at the Hungarian National Opera, Gounod's "Faust" at Saarländisches Staatstheater Saarbrücken and Puccini's "Tosca" at Staatsoper Hannover the following year. His most recent productions include Weinberg's "The Idiot" at the Theater an der Wien, Tchaikovsky's "Charodeyka" at the Frankfurt Opera, Giordano's "Siberia" at the Bregenz Festival and Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
With the production of Wagner's "Der fliegende Holländer", Vasili Barkhatov made his house debut at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in October 2022.
