Sangmin Lee
The South Korean baritone Sangmin Lee studied singing in his home city of Seoul and completed his studies at the Dresden University of Music while at the same time being a member of the Young Ensemble of the Semperoper. In 2007, he joined the ensemble there and won first prize at the international Italian opera singing competition “Competizione dell'Opera” in Dresden. At the Semperoper, he interpreted roles such as Il Conte Almaviva (Mozart “Le nozze di Figaro”), Masetto (Mozart “Don Giovanni”), Ford (Verdi “Falstaff”), Marcello (Puccini “La bohème”) and, among others, Figaro (Rossini “Il barbiere di Siviglia”) as a lyric baritone. From 2012 to 2018, Sangmin Lee was engaged at the Dortmund Opera, where he made the switch to cavalier baritone and performed there as as Count Luna (Verdi “Il trovatore”), Renato (Verdi “Un ballo in maschera”), Kurwenal (Wagner “Tristan und Isolde”), Peter (Humperdinck “Hänsel und Gretel”), Giorgio Germont (Verdi “La traviata”), Balstrode (Britten “Peter Grimes”), Valentin (Gounod “Faust”), Jago (Verdi “Otello”), Mandryka (R. Strauss' “Arabella”) and Faninal (R. Strauss' “Der Rosenkavalier”) and also took on the title roles in Tchaikovsky's “Eugene Onegin” and Verdi's “Nabucco”. In 2013, Sangmin Lee made his debut as Amonasro in Verdi's “Aida” at Theater Hof, made guest appearances as Rigoletto (Verdi) at Staatstheater Darmstadt and as Scarpia (Puccini “Tosca”) at Theater Magdeburg, where he made his debut as Jochanaan (R. Strauss “Salome”) in 2018.
He has been engaged at the Staatstheater Nürnberg since the 2018/2019 season and has appeared in roles such as Escamillo (Bizet “Carmen”), Alfio (Mascagni “Cavalleria rusticana”), Sharpless (Puccini “Madama Butterfly”) and as Friedrich von Telramund in Wagner's “Lohengrin”, among others. Sangmin Lee already made a guest appearance at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in the 2021/22 season as Giorgio Germont and is now returning to the Rhine in the role of Enrico (“Lucia di Lammermoor”).
