Sophie Martin

Dancer
French dancer Sophie Martin began her training at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. In 2003, she joined Scottish Ballet under the direction of Ashley Page and was promoted to principal in 2008. In 2011 she received the Critic's Circle National Dance Award for Best Female Performance in Kenneth Macmillan's “The Song of the Earth”. Her repertoire includes works by George Balanchine, Kenneth Macmillan, Hans van Manen, Frederick Ashton, William Forsythe, Ashley Page, Krzysztof Pastor, Christopher Bruce, Crystal Pite, David Dawson, Javier de Frutos, Annabelle Ochoa-Lopez, Jorma Elo, Bryan Arias, Christopher Hampson, Matthew Bourne, Jessica Wright & Morgann Runacre-Temple, Sophie Laplane, Stephen Petronio and Helen Pickett.
Several roles were created for her, e.g. Juliet by Krzysztof Pastor in “Romeo and Juliet”, the title role Alice in a choreography by Ashley Page and Odette/Odile in “Swan Lake” by David Dawson. As a dancer at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, she expanded her repertoire to include the title role in David Dawson's “Giselle” and Elisabeth in Bridget Breiner's “Maria Stuart”. Sophie Martin is a member of the Ballett am Rhein from the 2024/25 season.
