Wun Sze Chan

Wun Sze Chan trained as a dancer at the Jean M. Wong School of Ballet in Hong Kong, the Hamburg Ballett ballet school and on a summer course with the New Zealand Ballet School. From 2004 to 2008, she was a company member of the Bavarian State Ballet, where she danced in works choreographed by Lucinda Childs, John Cranko, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Itzik Galili, John Neumeier, Marius Petipa, Simone Sandroni and others. In 2008, she moved on to Nederlands Dans Theater’s NDT II, where she was able to broaden her repertoire with works choreographed by Marco Goecke, Jiří Kylián, Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, Ohad Naharin and Lukáš Timulak. She won 1st prize at the Hong Kong Young Ballet Stars and the Dame Margot Fonteyn Award at the Tsinfom C. Wong Memorial competition in 2002. The critics panel of Tanzjournal magazine voted Wun Sze Chan “Outstanding Dancer” of 2008. Martin Schläpfer engaged her for the Ballet am Rhein from the beginning of the 2010/11 season, where she danced in ballets by George Balanchine, Regina van Berkel, Merce Cunningham, Nils Christe, Mats Ek, Hubert Essakow, William Forsythe, Kurt Jooss, Antoine Jully, Hans van Manen, Amanda Miller, Martin Schläpfer, Paul Taylor and Antony Tudor. In 2016, Wun Sze Chan created her first original work as a choreographer with the ballet ‘It Is Passing By’ at Theater Duisburg, as part of the Ballett am Rhein’s choreography platform ‘Young Moves’. In 2017 this was followed by her ballet ‘No Destination’ at Opernhaus Düsseldorf. During the 2021/22 season, she danced the role of the Maid in Demis Volpi’s "Der Nussknacker", on which she also worked as a choreographer. She has also performed in Andrey Kaydanovskiy's "Die kahle Sängerin", as Luise in Aszure Barton's "Baal", as a woman in Neshama Nashman's "Eine kleine Frau" in "Choleric" by Hélène Blackburn and in Demis Volpi's "The thing with feathers".
