At the helm of Cas Public for more than 30 years, Hélène Blackburn is a leading figure in contemporary dance and a prominent artistic ambassador on the international stage. Close to half of her 20 works are geared to young audiences, putting her at the forefront of youth-centered creation. Speaking to young audiences and the general public alike, her shows are seasoned world travellers that have been welcomed at many prestigious venues, including the Opéra national de Paris, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Lincoln Center in New York City. She is also an experienced pedagogue who creates works for companies and professional dance training centres in Canada and across Europe on a regular basis.
Hélène Blackburn’s contribution to the advancement of original dance in Quebec has earned her many distinctions. She is particularly honoured to have received the following two: the 2019 Prix Hommage, awarded by the Association des diffuseurs de spectacles (RIDEAU) in recognition of her extraordinary choreographic career; and the 2016 Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal, awarded for 15 years of artistic daring in dance for young audiences.
Based on the works, tales, and legends of the Western repertoire, Hélène Blackburn’s choreographic art unearths and reformulates the great riddles of existence.
