Sharon Eyal

Sharon Eyal was born in Jerusalem and danced in the famous Batsheva Dance Company from 1990 to 2008, where she created her first choreographic works. She was associate artistic director from 2003 to 2004 and house choreographer of the company for a total of seven years (2005 to 2012). Since 2009 she has also choreographed for other companies, such as Carte Blanche in Norway, the Royal Swedish Ballet, the Staatsballett Berlin and the Nederlands Dans Theater, for which she has already created four works. In 2013, Sharon Eyal founded her own company, L-E-V, together with her long-time artistic partner Gai Behar. The seven works she has created for her company since then have been shown with more than 200 performances all over the world, including at the Joyce Theatre New York City, Jacob's Pillow Festival, Sadler's Wells in London, Festival Julidans in Amsterdam or Ruhrtriennale. Sharon Eyal's choreographic style is based on the movement language and teaching method developed by Ohad Naharin over the last 20 years, which he calls Gaga. It is very much about feeling, an expanded body awareness and self-awareness - and based on this, the intuitive connection to others emerges. Sharon Eyal has developed an impressive stage language based on this technique, which pushes the intensity of self-awareness to the extreme. L-E-V, the name of her company, means "heart" in Hebrew. However, her works do not appear emotional - the first impression is often rather one of cool detachment. But it is the pulse, the beat from the depths of the innermost, raw and fragile and at the same time unstoppably strong, that bleeds through her choreographies and touches us immediately.
