Sami Luttinen

Born in Finland, bass Sami Luttinen studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Before becoming an ensemble member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in 1997, he was employed at the Theater Kiel from 1995. In 2000 he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and in 2006 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Throughout Europe he has worked with conductors such as Roger Norrington, Jirí Kout and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. He has appeared at various festivals and is a regular guest at the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Finnish National Opera. His extensive repertoire includes roles such as Raimondo (Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor"), Banco (Verdi's "Macbeth"), Philip II and Grand Inquisitor (Verdi's "Don Carlo"), Ramfis (Verdi's "Aida") as well as the Mozart roles of the Commendatore ("Don Giovanni"), Sarastro ("The Magic Flute") and Bartolo ("Le nozze di Figaro"). The Wagner roles of Daland ("Der fliegende Holländer"), Fasolt and Fafner ("Das Rheingold"), Hunding ("Die Walküre"), Hagen ("Götterdämmerung") and Gurnemanz ("Parsifal") are also part of his repertoire, as well as Gremin (Tchaikovsky "Eugene Onegin"), John Claggart (Britten "Billy Budd"), General Polkan (Rimsky-Korsakov "The Golden Cockerel"), Count Waldner (R. Strauss "Arabella"), Faust (Prokofiev "The Fiery Angel"), Sawjol Prokofievich Dikoj (Janáček "Katja Kabanova") and Kadmos (Henze "The Bassarids"), among others.
At Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Sami Luttinen was also recently heard as Timur (Puccini "Turandot") and Thibaut d'Arc (Tchaikovsky "Die Jungfrau von Orléans"), as Robert in Wittenbrink's "Comedian Harmonists - Best of"), Gremin, Dorfrichter in Janáček's "Jenůfa" and Basilio in Rossini's "Il barbiere di Siviglia". In the 2024/25 season, he will also be back as Fafner in "Das Rheingold" and in Peter Maxwell Davis' opera "The Lighthouse" as Arthur/ 3rd officer.
