Azim Karimov

Azim Karimov, born in Pärnu, Estonia, graduated as an oboist from the Schnittke Moscow State College of Music in 2012 and from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 2018 as a symphony and opera conductor. He made his international debut at the Kyoto International Music Students Festival in 2018 and became principal conductor of the Moscow State Chamber Orchestra the following year. From 2020 to 2022, Karimov conducted the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra.
He conducted the world premiere of Andrei Besogonov's opera “The Fruit at the Bottom of the Bowl” at the International Diaghilev Festival in Perm in 2017 and the Moscow premiere of Britten's “Curlew River” in 2019. During the 2020/21 season, Karimov was invited to work with the Opéra National de Lyon before joining it for the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Since 2023, Azim Karimov has been musical assistant to the General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera, Vladimir Jurowski. In this role, he was involved in the productions of “War and Peace” (Prokofiev) and “The Passenger” (Weinberg), among others. He conducted the Bavarian State Orchestra in “Peter and the Wolf”. Azim's upcoming engagements include performances of “The Passenger” at the Bavarian State Opera, “Eugene Onegin” at the Norwegian National Opera and concerts with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.
