Bass-baritone Torben Jürgens was born in Hagen and studied in Cologne and Essen. After his first permanent engagement at Theater Bielefeld, he joined the ensemble of Deutsche Oper am Rhein in 2012, where he has since appeared in the Mozart roles of Figaro (“Le nozze di Figaro”), Leporello (“Don Giovanni”), Publio (“La clemenza di Tito”) and Speaker (“Die Zauberflöte”), among others. His repertoire also includes Ariodates (Handel “Xerxes”), Herr Reich (Nicolai “The Merry Wives of Windsor”), Donner (Wagner “Das Rheingold”), Der Tod (Ullmann “Der Kaiser von Atlantis”) and Alidoro (Rossini “La Cenerentola”), among many other roles.
Guest engagements have taken him to the Munich, Hamburg and Stuttgart State Operas, the Semperoper Dresden, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Real Madrid and to festivals such as the George Enescu Festival Bucharest and the Glyndebourne Festival. As a concert singer, he has performed a broad repertoire of bass roles in the great sacred works of Bach, Beethoven, Dvořák, Haydn, Mozart and Verdi, including with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, the Beethovenfest Bonn, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Bachakademie Stuttgart, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Alte Oper Frankfurt and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. He has worked with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Vladimir Jurowski, Asher Fisch, René Jacobs, Adam Fischer, Sir Neville Marriner, Michael Sanderling and Simone Young and with orchestras such as the Dresdner Philharmonie, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the hr-Sinfonieorchester and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
In the 2024/25 season, Torben Jürgens will be heard at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as Sarastro (Mozart “The Magic Flute”), Angelotti (Puccini “Tosca”), Old Forced Laborer (Shostakovich “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk”) and Maestro (Donizetti “Prima la Mamma!”), among others. At the 2024 Salzburg Festival, he will make his debut as Haushofmeister in Richard Strauss' “Capriccio”.
