We are the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (DOR).

The DOR is a theater partnership between the cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg. It produces and presents music theater and ballet in repertoire. In addition, there are innovative participatory projects in both genres, as well as productions and outreach projects specifically
for young audiences.

We are about 600 employees, coming from 40 nations. Our company is the artistic home for the largest ensemble of solo singers in the German opera landscape, for the Ballett am Rhein with a company of 45 dancers, the opera chorus, and two partner orchestras: the Duisburg Philharmonic and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra. Every season, we welcome more than 300 guest artists from all over the world.

Our art captures the spirit of our age.

We see the DOR as a source of creativity coming from the pulse of our times.

We aim to develop contemporary music theater for the future and recognise our key responsibilities for continuing our cultural heritage.

We stand for artistic excellence. For us, this is a core value for our new works, as it is to our reinterpretation of classical works and the standard repertoire, on our stages as well as presented in the urban spaces of both cities.

Our venues are places for positive encounters, dialogue and participation. We offer supportive environments for experiencing deep emotions, as well as entertainment, the possibilities of both communal experiences and personal reflection, exploring complexity and contradiction.

We experiment with new forms and performance formats, and continue to develop music theater and ballet for the future.

We nurture and support young talent and the further development of all of our artists. This is an important building block for a sustainable creative institution and art form.

We are an integral part of the lively local performing arts scene and of the international cultural community.

We warmly invite you to be our guests.

We aim to develop contemporary music theater for the future and recognise our key responsibilities for continuing our cultural heritage.

Whenever and wherever we perform, we see ourselves as welcoming hosts. Our aim is to create spaces and conditions in which people feel comfortable, safe, respected and understood, and so can enjoy moments that are unforgettable in their immediacy.

Our main venues, the Düsseldorf Opera House and the Duisburg Theater, are two striking, centrally located buildings. They should be open, inviting and accessible to everyone, and visiting them should be a natural part of everyone’s everyday lives.

Plus, we offer a wide range of artistic experiences outside of our main venues in order to reach people where they live.

All employees are ambassadors of the DOR and are driven by the conviction that our art embraces and celebrates the different perspectives of an open and diverse society. We advocate for such a society.

We are a strong team.

We are a lively and international company in which expertise over a wide range of crafts, technical, organizational, artistic and creative skills from over 50 professions come together.

We nurture this knowledge by focusing on personnel development, including through training, further education and well-being management. We strive to be consistently developing as a company and to be an attractive place to work now and in the future.

Every performance is the result of a complex interaction between all departments, which can only be achieved through trust and respectful cooperation. To achieve this, we are guided by an understanding of values and rules, which are based on the Code of Conduct of the Deutschen Bühnenvereins.

We value that each individual contributes to the success of our performances. This requires mutual respect. Together we strive to achieve open working relationships and mutual appreciation. This workplace culture is fundamental to all processes and should be reflected in practice and delivery. Open and solution-oriented communication is important to us.

We are united by our enthusiasm for what we create together for our stages and for our audiences.

We shape the future.

We see it as our responsibility to search for specific solutions to the challenges of our times.

We understand that sustainability is the holistic social, ecological and economic responsibility to use resources wisely. With this in mind, we continuously review and optimise our own processes and structures.

In the coming years, the building of the new Düsseldorf Opera House, and the renovation of the Duisburg Theater, will create pioneering cultural, educational and open social places, where artistic content, experiences and architecture will be combined in an innovative way.

We actively support this process in order to contribute to shaping the future of music theater and ballet in both cities, to create the best possible working environment for our work and to address, invite and bring together
the vibrant diversity of both cities.
