NEW: You can watch the gala via live-stream on the internet. The link to the live stream will be posted on our starting page shortley before the gala begins.
On Friday, 16 July, shortly before the end of the first season under the new directors’ team of Generalintendant Christoph Meyer, General Director of Music Axel Kober and Ballet Director Martin Schläpfer, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein together with its Circle of Friends extends an invitation to a festive gala. OPER AND BALLET AM RHEIN FOR ALL is then the motto in Düsseldorf Opera House, but also on the banks of the Rhine in the middle of the historic centre. In co-operation with Düsseldorf Marketing and Tourismus GmbH (DMT) the summer gala will be screened on Düsseldorf’s Burgplatz live as a Public Viewing. Thus several thousand visitors can be enabled to see Martin Schläpfer’s Ballett am Rhein, international stars of the opera scene, other first-class soloists and the chorus of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein along with the Düsseldorf Symphonic Orchestra under Generalmusikdirektor Axel Kober.
Robert Dean Smith, who has been enthusiastically received as a Wagner tenor in the greatest opera houses of the world, leads a line-up of outstanding soloists from the company itself: Christina Dietzsch, Olesya Golovneva, Sylvia Hamvasi, Nataliya Kovalova, Iulia Elena Surdu, Adrian Sâmpetrean and Boris Statsenko sing with the Chorus of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein brilliant arias, duets and ensembles from famous operatic works by Rossini und Bellini, Wagner and Verdi, Bizet and Bernstein.
An essential part in the programme is played by Martin Schläpfer’s Ballett am Rhein: Exclusively for OPERA AND BALLET AM RHEIN FOR ALL, dancers of his company will perform three miniatures from Schläpfer’s ballets “Obelisco” and “24 Préludes”, in addition the work with which he first captured his public at the beginning of the previous season: “March, Waltz, Polka” plays with the Viennese world of sound of the Strauss family and retraces with charm and fine irony the Viennese dichotomy of euphoria and melancholy, intense feeling and burlesque comedy.
As prominent compères Katrin Bauerfeind and Jan Josef Liefers jointly guide through the evening: Katrin Bauerfeind has made herself a name presenting the most diverse television forms and gala events, for instance in 2008 and 2009 by compèring the gala opening and prize awards of the Berlin International Berlin Film Festival, or in her own programme “Bauerfeind” on 3sat. She will now demonstrate on the operatic stage her “qualities as a wide-awake and ironical young presenter” (Tagesanzeiger) At her side will be the frequent prizewinner as actor and director Jan Josef Liefers, who has attained widespread familiarity with the public through films for television and the cinema such as “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”, “Rossini”, “The Miracle of Lengede” and “The Baader-Meinhof Complex” and also as Prof. Karl Friedrich Boerne in the “Tatort” series playing in Münster. Jan Josef Liefers indulges his passion for music with his band “Oblivion”. His current programme “Soundtrack of my Childhood” tells part of German history and was published in book form also in 2009.
“OPERA AND BALLET AM RHEIN FOR ALL is turning into a fixed landmark of our programme”, declares Generalintendant Christoph Meyer. „We go towards people and arouse interest for the artistic peak achievements which can occur at any performance of our houses in Düsseldorf and Duisburg. It is of great satisfaction for me that the City of Düsseldorf, the DMT and our Circle of Friends give the idea such decisive support.”
Prof. Dr. Dieter H. Vogel, President of the Circle of Friends of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, adds, “By uniting the public gala with that of the Friends we wanted to make one composite event of even greater stature to arouse enthusiasm in everyone and at the same time to support the Opera financially”.
“The event is aimed not only at classic opera fans”, confirms Dr. Eva-Maria Illigen-Günther, managing director of Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourismus GmbH (DMT), co-partner of the event. “Especially the Supporting pre-event on the Burgplatz devised by the DMT is a very family-conscious concept of how to arouse interest in classical music and ballet”, she adds. From 15:00 h Singer-entertainer Joachim Wiemers will guide through the afternoon, including an entertaining and informative quiz about the world of opera , lounge music and unplugged Pop from the band “The Clou Experience”. The supporting programme will be rounded off with inserts by a video artist and short films about opera. A wide selection of gastronomic pleasures will also leave no culinary wish unfulfilled. The DMT is mobilizing its publicity armoury energetically for the Opera Gala, placing advertisements for instance and distributing flyers at travel fairs and also making special travel offers to the event.
