When another composer was unable to deliver his opera as planned, the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan was suddenly faced with a crisis. They responded by asking Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848) to rework an older score. However, his reply was: “I’ve got enough energy to deliver a brand new opera in fourteen days, you’ll see! I give you my word.” Together with his librettist Felice Romani he succeeded and at its world premiere on 12th May 1832 ‘L’elisir d’amore’ became one of the greatest successes of Donizetti‘s career. To this day his ”opera comica” enjoys an unbroken performance tradition in leading opera houses around the world and remains an enduring audience favourite.
The young Nemorino has long been in love with Adina, yet she appears to be beyond his reach. When the danger arises that she might marry the elite officer Belcore, Nemorino spends his entire fortune on the mountebank Dulcemara’s purported love potion in the hope that it will finally bring him the success he longs for. After countless complications which are reminiscent of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, the couple eventually come together, Nemorino finally comes into some money – and nobody has noticed that the bottle of love potion contained nothing more than cheap wine.

“Director Joan Anton Rechi has revealed Gaetano Donizetti‘s ‘L’elisir d’amore’ to be an astonishingly rich masterpiece, he combines jollity with thoughtful reflection and enables his designer Alfons Flores to create ravishing images. Everything takes place amid a sparkling and glittering sky made up of thousands of glasses, hanging upside down from the flies as symbols of dazzling pleasure: they are bells, tears, champagne goblets, they crystallize light, break it up and transform it into a milky blur. There is huge applause for a very, very beautiful production.” This is how Wolfram Goertz described his impressions of the Düsseldorf premiere of ‘L’elisir d’amore’ in the Rheinische Post. On 17th October 2015 Joan Anton Rechi’s acclaimed production will have its premiere at Theater Duisburg.
