It happens in the best families: an uncle dies and all his greedy relatives can think of is how to inherit his money. In the case of Giacomo Puccini‘s “Gianni Schicchi”, however, the rich Buoso Donati has left his entire wealth to a monastery. This is a bitter blow to all his brothers-in-law, cousins, nephews and nieces, who feel cheated of their inheritance. When the uncle comes back to life, each of them makes an effort to change his mind in their favour. Nobody notices that the sly Gianni Schicchi lies behind the dead man’s sudden resurrection, from whose macabre trick a pair of young lovers are the only ones who should profit.

“Gianni Schicchi” is a cynical black comedy whose text is derived from an episode from Dante Alighieri‘s “Divine Comedy”. Dietrich Hilsdorf places the piece at the beginning of his production of Puccini‘s triptych “Il trittico”, originally created in 2003, in which he pinpoints three steps in the progressive brutalization of human relations.

History can tell of countless young women who have been banished to a nunnery on the basis of a “lapse”. In the moving melodrama “Suor Angelica” the daughter of a respected family struggles with the trauma of bringing a child into the world out of wedlock and bringing disgrace upon her family. Puccini, whose sister was in charge of a nunnery in Lucca, had a great affinity for this story. The heroine of his opera takes her own life years later when she learns of the child’s death and thus commits another deadly sin. Yet the sign of grace she yearns for while she is dying is not granted. Dietrich Hilsdorf presents the opera as an intrigue in which both the merciless family and the pious nuns are implicated.

Love and deadly jealousy, these are the motifs at the heart of operatic drama. In his one-act opera “Il tabarro” (the overcaot) Puccini has painted them in particularly dark colours. Trapped in the bleak environment of the Parisian docks, three people realise the hopelessness of their existence: Giorgetta, who has lost her child and with it her love of her husband, Luigi, who yields to Giorgetta and her hunger for love, and Michele, who kills this rival in love, thereby destroying the last hope of happiness.

The piece, which is reminiscent of the verismo operas “Cavalleria rusticana” by Mascgani and “Pagliacci” by Leoncavallo, ends in a horrific “coup de theatre”, with which the director Dietrich Hilsdorf transforms the senseless self-destruction of humanity as a result of inhuman conditions into the shattering climax of Puccini’s trilogy “Il trittico”.
