There is hardly another work for the stage which has experienced such a history of success as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756–1791)’s final opera ‘The Magic Flute’. Its world premiere at the Freihaustheater auf der Wieden in Vienna on 30th September 1791 was a triumph. Key to its success was not only Mozart’s music but also the theatrical sensibility of his librettist Emanuel Schikaneder. In the style of an ancient romance, their ‘Magic Flute’ tells of the path to enlightenment of a young couple who overcome a series of tests and dangers to be united at the end. Opera at the Freihaustheater was unthinkable without numerous stage effects. Schikaneder planned a total of 14 complex transformations to amaze the audience of this “opera of magic and machines”.

Since its world premiere artists have consistently engaged with the opera’s visual character. The British theatre company 1927 are part of this tradition with their hand-drawn animated interpretation of the music. For director Barrie Kosky, the challenge of the ‘Magic Flute‘ lies in accepting its heterogeneous nature: “Every attempt to interpret this piece in one direction alone is doomed to failure. You have to revel in the inconsistencies of the plot and characters and in the mix of fantasy, surrealism, magic and deeply moving human emotion.” The production he developed with 1927, which premiered at the Komische Oper Berlin in 2012 and has since been enthusiastically received in both Los Angeles and Duisburg, amazes audiences by playing in virtuoso style with their own associations and habitual ways of seeing. The singing performers interact with an imaginative animated film which follows Mozart’s musical magic and brings the fairy tale world occupied by Tamino, Pamina and Papageno to life.
