“In the years between ‘Rheingold” and “Walküre” Wotan must have had a pretty good time”. The gleeful allusion of the humorist Loriot would seem to refer to the efforts of the father of all the gods, after erecting Valhalla, to father nine Valkyries on nine different mothers and – after training them as a sort of valiant private commando regiment – to appoint them to protect him against the inroads of the Nibelungs.

Wagner (1813–1883) was also doing pretty well in exile in Zürich. Having escaped the consequences of his participation in the uprisings of 1848 in Germany, he was occupied in 1849 all the same with a fermenting idea of how to make the world a better place, now centred on a new hero with no previous convictions who was to be produced without any respect for any social fetters such as the taboo on incest. “The Valkyrie” is the part of the tetralogy where the action makes most progress. By the end of it the inevitability of failure is expressed by a humanly moving farewell: Wotan parts from his favourite daughter Brünnhilde with the pathos of an older generation which realizes that upstart youth will be unable to pass over its political heritage.
