“This year the Abduction from the Seraglio was produced, It is full of beauty, exceeded the public’s expectations, and the author’s good taste and delightful inventiveness earned the loudest and most general acclamation”. The Press in Vienna wrote this praise of the première of the “Singspiel” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). For Mozart and his contemporaries the orient still held an unexplored fascination. Thus, the abduction of two European women from the harem of the Turkish Pasha Selim gave rise to excitement and curiosity. Today what we admire in this “Entführung aus dem Serail” is above all the emotional profundity and discernment with which a composer of only 26 years was able to plumb experience of love, jealousy, despair, foolish greed and courage in his music. And we see how he brings his entertaining story to serve as an urgent appeal for more tolerance and humanity, when at the end of the Oriental adventure the Pasha renounces his desire for revenge, pardons the foreign fugitives and allows his adored Konstanze to return to her English home with her swain Belmonte.
