The scene is set in a small English fishing-village. Life here is hard and monotonous. A court case against the fisherman Peter Grimes, who is accused of having caused the death of his apprentice, is a sensational event. That the evidence did not suffice to convict the monosyllabic and surly fellow leads to endless rumours and suspicions which escalate into persecution. Finally his few remaining friends can only advise Grimes to do away with himself so that his worthy neighbours are at last placated.

“Peter Grimes” marked the beginning of director Immo Karaman’s series of Britten stagings at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, which demonstrated how near he feels to the emotional world of the British composer.

With the generous support of the Circle of Friends of Deutsche Oper am Rhein e.V.
