“Make your heroine suffer!” This watchword of the French writer Victorien Sardou, whose drama “La Tosca” Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) set to music, is just as valid in operatic form. The singer Floria Tosca, who lives for her art, is drawn into the intrigues of the lecherous Baron Scarpia. If she is to save her beloved Cavaradossi from torture and death, she must yield to Scarpia’s amatory advances. Tosca consents on condition that he gives free passage to her and Cavaradossi. When Scarpia makes for her, she stabs him. But Scarpia had deceived her, Cavaradossi dies and Tosca has lost everything.

Dietrich Hilsdorfs exciting staging. with its dramatic confrontation between the loving singer and Scarpia’s police state, guarantees “an unusually good and spectacular opera evening which still is likely to occupy the spectator’s mind long after the curtain is down”. (Peter Bilsing, “Der Opernfreund” magazine).
