It is risky to send a gallant young man out as postillon d’amour with a silver rose – especially when the prospective bridegroom on whose behalf he comes is not exactly in the first flush of youth. Baron Ochs von Lerchenau is well past his best, and Sophie, the young daughter of Herr von Faninal, finds him repulsive too, whereupon she falls in love with the rose-bearer Octavian instead. Until then Octavian had been fully occupied with a rather immature erotic entanglement with the beautiful Field Marshal’s wife, and it needs some guidance from the worldly-wise lady for him to be quite sure that his affair with her is over and that his future lies in the love of and for Sophie

Richard Strauss (1864–1949) and the poet and playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal in 1912 made out of this gorgeous qui-pro-quo a comedy which with its musical brilliance and scenic opulence is the swansong of the old pre-war world, in point of fact a world which never was and never would be again. Otto Schenk, for many years the leading director of the Vienna State Opera, staged “Der Rosenkavalier” in 1981 at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in picturesquely nostalgic settings which still today can make “that singular thing”, the passing of time, seem irrelevant.
