“Die Zauberflöte”, the last opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), is at the same time a comedy, a moral play, a children’s tale and an allegory. Parallel to the story are close connections with Freemasonry in its forms and rituals as far as these are known. The Mozart scholar Alfred Einstein wrote, “The Magic Flute is one of those pieces which delight a child and move the most experienced adult to tears and exalt the most learned. Every individual and each generation discovers something new in it”. In his “Zauberflöte” Mozart employs techniques of music and the stage to display comprehensibly through a musical comedy an existentially vital theme, the victory of love over all dangers run. The success of the world première on 30 September 1791 was due not only to the unique qualities of its musical score, but also to its sumptuous staging and to the novelty of its stage effects.

In Emanuel Schikaneder’s Freihaustheater all possible ways to entertain the public were exploited with technical requirements so artful that “Die Zauberflöte” became known as “the machinery opera”. True to this origin, the staging developed by Barrie Kosky together with the British theatre group “1927” played with the watching habits and connotations of the public so as to astonish and enchant. “Kosky and the 1927 directress Suzanne Andrade juggle with levels of style and play, real people become interactive with virtual visions and vice versa. A technical miracle, a filmic realization of the Magic Flute achieved by masterly co-ordination, for young and adult children”, wrote Albrecht Thiemann in the magazine “Opernwelt”. And Albrecht Piper on RBB-online (Berlin/Brandenburg broadcasting) declared, “an optical firework of stagecraft of highest quality … which has us see the term ‘magic opera’ in an entirely new light”.
