The king dies. Amfortas, leader of the Grail Brotherhood, is tormented by a wound that will not heal - beaten by his arch-enemy Klingsor, to whom he also lost the Holy Spear of Christ guarded by the community. Day after day, the Grail Knights must watch helplessly as Amfortas perishes from his pain and guilt. Only a prophecy gives them hope: a "pure fool" will one day redeem the stricken king through his compassion and win back for them the Holy Spear guarded by the fallen Grail Knight Klingsor in his magic garden. Then Parsifal knocks at the gates of the Grail Castle...

The well-known director Michael Thalheimer ("Othello", "Macbeth") tells Wagner's last, monumental stage work in his usual suspenseful visual language reduced to the essential.

"Parsifal' without overwhelming pathos, without towering symbolism, without political actualisation, without apocalyptic prophecy. [...] It is possible: a miracle of omission." Manuel Brug / Die Welt
