Mthuthuzeli November

South African choreographer Mthuthuzeli November started dancing at the age of 15 and graduated in 2014. He was awarded the prize for best contemporary work at the South African International Competition in 2012 and 2014 and made his choreographic debut with the Cape Dance Company in 2014. This is also where he created the works "Visceral" and "SUN - The rite of passage". He danced with the Cape Dance Company and in a South African production of "The West Side Story" before joining Ballet Black in September 2015. Since then, he has created several award-winning/nominated works for Ballet Black for stage and film in 2016, including the Laurence Olivier Award for "INGOMA". For his solo work, he was awarded the South African Emerging Artist Prize by the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefee (KKNK). Mthuthuzeli has created short works for the 2018 and 2020 English National Ballet Emerging Dancer competition, as well as creating and dancing for British grime artist Stormzy at the 2019 Glastonbury Festival. He was also commissioned by Cape Town Opera and Cape Town City Ballet to create choreography for a film production of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. He was also commissioned by The Grange Festival to create a work for the production of "Precipice" (2020). Fall For Dance North commissioned him and his brother Siphe to create the work "My Mothers Son" (November 2023). Mthuthuzeli has continued to create works around the world with Washington Ballet (USA), Royal Ballet (UK), Northern Ballet (UK), TanzLuzern (Switzerland), Cape Town City Ballet (SA), Ballett Zürich (Switzerland), Charlotte Ballet (USA). He was nominated in 2022 for Best Soloist in a Production (Black British Theatre Award) and for Best Classical Choreography at the Critics Circle National Dance Awards for his work "The Waiting Game". Most recently, he won Best Choreography at the 2023 Black British Theatre Awards for his work "Nina: By Whatever Means".
