Daniel Smith was born in Vancouver and graduated with distinction from Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. This was followed by engagements with the National Ballet of Canada (2007/08) under the direction of Karen Kain, Colorado Ballet (2008 to 2010) under Gil Boggs and some time spent in Tokyo, where he worked as a freelance dancer and guest soloist from 2010. He decided to re-join a company full time in 2013, becoming a member of Gonzalo Galguera’s Ballett Magdeburg. In 2014/15 he also took the guest role of Prince Siegfried in Ralf Rossa’s ‘Swan Lake’ at Halle Opera. Daniel Smith moved to join the Ballett am Rhein company at the beginning of the 2018/19 season. His repertoire includes ballets by James Kudelka (‘The Nutcracker’ and ‘Cinderella’ among others), roles in Antony Tudor’s ‘Echoing of Trumpets’ and Christopher Wheeldon’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in addition to works by Mauro Astolfi, Martin Freedman, Pablo Lastras, Brian Reeder, Adam Reist, Martin Schläpfer and Lila York. He has danced numerous leading roles in works choreographed by Gonzalo Galguera, including Prince Desiree (‘Sleeping Beauty’), Franz (‘Coppélia’), James (‘La Sylphide’) and Otto (‘Elective Affinities’). A winner of the Canadian Prince Edward Award in 2006 and 2007, Daniel Smith was also awarded Theater Magdeburg’s Sponsors’ Prize for Young Artists in 2016. He danced most recently with the Ballett am Rhein in Demis Volpi’s productions of ‘The Nutcracker’ and ‘A simple piece’.
