Christian Dammann studied conducting (Prof. Lutz Herbig), piano (Prof. Angelika Nebel) and musicology at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf. Masterclasses organised by the Bavarian Music Council and the European Academy of Music and Performing Arts rounded off his artistic training. He also studied Romance languages and literature at the Rheinisch-Westfälisch Technische Hochschule Aachen and the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.
From 2003 to 2007, he was a solo repetiteur with conducting duties at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven and has held the same position at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein since the 2007/08 season.
In 2018, Metzler-Verlag published his book "Bonjour Lolo! Französische 'Lohengrin'-Parodien 1886–1900", which was described by the magazine "wagnerspectrum" as a "relevant study of Wagner reception in France". Christian Dammann is also a lecturer for score playing at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf. In 2023, he received his doctorate from the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. In 2024, he was awarded the Folkwang Prize in the field of musicology for his dissertation on the French and Belgian reception of Wagner in dramatic opera parody.
