Andreas Schüller

Andreas Schüller, born in Berlin, studied horn, piano and conducting in his hometown with Sebastian Weigle and Rolf Reuter, among others. During his studies he already worked as a pianist and conductor with ensembles such as the Neue Opernbühne Berlin and the INBOCCALLUPO ensemble. An assistantship with Fabio Luisi brought the conductor to the Salzburg Festival in 2002, with which he remained associated (most recently as choral director) until 2007. In 2003, the German Music Council accepted him into the Conductors' Forum sponsorship program, and he participated in master classes given by Roberto Paternostro and Peter Gülke.
In the course of his career he worked with directors such as Martin Kušej, Klaus Guth, Stefan Herheim, Falk Richter and Philipp Stölzl as well as conductors such as Markus Stenz, Valerie Gergiev, Bertrand de Billy and especially Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In 2003/2004 Andreas Schüller was engaged at the Vienna Volksoper, where he conducted a broad repertoire of operas, operettas and ballets. In 2005 and 2006 he also served as 2nd Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden. From 2013 to 2020, Andreas Schüller served as principal conductor of the Staatsoperette Dresden. Other engagements have taken him to the Leipzig Opera, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Cologne Opera House, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and the Graz Opera House, among others. For many years he was also musical director of the Young Philharmonic Orchestra of Niedersachsen. In recent years he has conducted the Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, the Colombian National Orchestra Bogotá, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the State Orchestra Kassel. Since the founding summer of 2005, Andreas Schüller has been Musical Director of the Lower Austrian Festival in Retz, which, in addition to cultivating church operas, is primarily dedicated to literature. As General Music Director, he has been working at the Stadttheater Gießen since the 2022/23 season.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Andreas Schüller will take over the musical direction of Offenbach's "Orpheus in der Unterwelt".
